We have recently insulated our garage door to make it more comfortable and keep our costs down. As you all know it can get pretty hot and unbearable in the garage during our Florida summers. Most people don’t realize the garage is the largest uninsulated area of the home.
For my Lakewood Ranch garage I used 3/4 R-Max insulation which is sold at the home improvement stores in 4 X 8 sheets and reflectix on top of that. The R-Max produces rigid polyisocyanurate foam insulation and has an R-Value of 5 which is the highest R-Value per inch of any insulation available. This product is lightweight, easy to handle and easy to cut. I cut it to fit in my car in the parking lot at the Home Depot in Sarasota. I applied it to the garage door with double sided tape and 3M spray addhesive. On top of the R-Max I used a product called Reflectix which is a double reflective foil insulation. Think of a product that is similar to the sheilds we put in front of our windshields to block the Florida sun almost like a bubble paper wrapped in aluminum foil. That gave it a finished look (like something from NASA) and added even more insulation.
This will add value to the home if we decide to sell in the future and I think a buyer would like the energy efficiency and comfort it provides. Check out the You Tube video from the DIY channel below!
